About Of Doordarshan
Doordarshan—literally, all distant glimpses—is the face and witness of India’s transformation into a global leader in digital communications.
Interestingly, the confusing cyber pathways that today crisscross homes and streets and represent the voices of over a billion Indians actually began with a modest experiment at the public broadcaster on September 15, 1959. A makeshift studio and its staff broadcast their voices and images through a small transmitter, daring to dream of becoming the primary medium for the development of a nation that had just shed the shackles of slavery a decade earlier.
This experiment became a service in 1965, when Doordarshan began broadcasting signals to television sets in living rooms in and around the country’s capital, New Delhi. By 1972, services were extended to Mumbai and Amritsar, and then to seven other cities by 1975. Throughout this time, it was part of the national broadcaster, All India Radio. On 1 April 1976, it became a separate department in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, although it is still served by All India Radio, especially for news.
